Former New York City cop Max Payne takes a bodyguard job protecting the wealthy Branco family in São Paulo, hoping to leave his troubled past behind. When events spiral out of control, he searches for the truth in an unfamiliar city.
This third-person shooter centers on firefights with firearms, cover, and Max’s signature bullet-time slow motion and diving maneuvers. Players move through encounters while managing weapons and surviving enemy attacks.
The story unfolds in linear chapters across varied locations. Arcade modes let players replay chapters for scores and timed challenges, while multiplayer modes offer play beyond the campaign. The complete edition includes the original game and previously released downloadable content.
In this selected set of reviews, players often praise the weighty, satisfying gunplay, especially the bullet-time dives, and many enjoy Max’s bleak personal story and the game’s cinematic presentation. The soundtrack and varied settings also draw frequent praise. Some reviewers feel the story and tone differ from the earlier games, and many complaints focus on needing the Rockstar launcher to access the game.
