Monstrum takes the traditional survival horror formula and remixes it completely with procedurally generated levels, permadeath, and AI driven predators, ensuring that nowhere on its derelict cargo ship is ever truly safe.

You wake alone aboard a derelict cargo ship and must find a way off it while a monster hunts you. There is no combat-focused way to deal with the threat; survival depends on avoiding it and using what you find.
Explore the ship for parts needed to prepare one of three escape routes: a helicopter, submarine, or life raft. Hide in lockers or under furniture, and use objects as distractions to create opportunities to move or search.
Each run changes item locations and selects one of three monsters with different behaviors. Death starts a new attempt, so you must search and escape again. Notes and recordings scattered around the ship offer fragments of its story.
Players who enjoy Monstrum often praise the tense, lonely atmosphere of being hunted through the cargo ship. Reviews also value the changing item placements, monster selection, and escape routes for keeping runs unpredictable, and some describe the pursuit and eventual mastery of the game as compelling. Other players find the experience frustrating or repetitive, especially when monster behavior or the search for a needed item gets in the way.
