In a distant-future war between the machine-based Core and the rebel Arm, you command one side’s forces across a campaign of battles on planets and moons. Each faction has its own campaign, with missions ranging from defending a location to eliminating enemy forces.
Build structures and factories, then manage steady flows of metal and energy to expand your forces. Produce a wide range of units—including robots, vehicles, aircraft, ships, and submarines—and give them orders as you build defenses and launch attacks.
Terrain and battlefield information shape your plans: units move across 3D landscapes, obstacles can block fire, and radar and sonar help reveal enemy movement. Campaigns unlock stronger units and weapons as you progress; skirmish and multiplayer battles offer other ways to command your forces.
Players often praise Total Annihilation as a memorable, strategically rich RTS, citing its large battles, varied forces, resource management, and terrain-aware combat. The orchestral soundtrack and nostalgia are also recurring points of enjoyment. Some reviewers, however, find its age apparent, particularly in controls and compatibility on newer systems.
