Town of Salem is a multiplayer murder mystery for 7 to 15 players. Each player is randomly assigned an alignment and role: Town members try to uncover hidden threats, while Mafia and other dangerous roles conceal their identities. Neutral roles add further possibilities to each game.
Play alternates between night and day. At night, roles use abilities such as investigating suspects, healing attacked players, or secretly killing. During the day, players share clues and accusations, vote to put a suspect on trial, and decide whether to sentence them to death.
A host can choose which roles appear in a match, and players receive a role card describing their abilities and alignment. With 33 roles, the available actions and information differ from game to game. Players can also customize their character and surroundings, and earn items through achievements.
Players who praise Town of Salem enjoy piecing together who is lying, bluffing their way through suspicion, and seeing how different roles shape each match. Some describe the unpredictable accusations and trials as funny, while others value the strategic depth and the chance to play with friends. These positive comments often sit alongside complaints about hostile chat, disruptive players, and difficulty getting into matches.
