Each run sends you through a changing dungeon as you search for the exit to the next floor. You reveal the map one tile at a time, with each space potentially hiding monsters, loot, traps, devices, or events.
Combat is turn-based, and survival depends on choosing how to handle enemies and making use of the items and surroundings you find. Weapons and other equipment have randomized attributes, while hero choices let you shape your character’s strengths.
Runs can end in permanent death, but the game also offers longer-term progression through additional heroes and upgrades. Shrines let you sacrifice resources for divine blessings, with the possibility of changing allegiance later; multiple modes and leaderboards are also available.
Players who enjoy the game often point to its tile-by-tile exploration, strategic risk-taking, and RPG-style equipment and character builds. Some appreciate how these systems make runs feel different, while others find the random outcomes and required grinding frustrating.
