You play as a mercenary in the Hundred Years’ War, taking missions for England or France. The free-mission campaign lets you fight from either side and influence battles across a map of towns, castles, and regions.
On the battlefield, you lead squads directly rather than fighting alone. Switch between up to four squads, choose from troop types such as footmen, archers, cavalry, and siege forces, and use their distinct abilities and strengths to capture or defend objectives.
Build your roster and develop your character and weapons as you take on missions. Nightmare mode adds a separate fantasy conflict with monsters such as dragons and cyclops; the game also includes online multiplayer.
Players who enjoy the game often single out its squad-commanding combat as a distinctive blend of action and battlefield tactics, along with the variety of troop types and the pleasure of sweeping through enemies—especially on horseback. Some also appreciate its unusual take on the Hundred Years’ War, character customization, or nostalgic appeal. Several reviews note that character and weapon progression can quickly make battles too easy, while repeated objectives can wear thin.
