You travel across a folkloric Depression-era United States as a wandering story collector, working to repay a debt by learning the personal histories of 16 travelers.
Explore the map on foot and visit locations where brief encounters reveal stories drawn from folklore, legends, and everyday life. You can also use options such as hitchhiking, trains, and limited fast travel to get around.
Stories are a resource for building relationships: share tales with travelers at campfires, matching their requested mood to move their stories forward. As tales circulate, they can change, while each traveler gradually reveals more of their own life.
Reviews that respond positively most often praise the writing, folklore, and personal stories, along with the evocative music, illustrations, and voice acting. Some enjoy the slow, reflective journey and the way stories change as they spread; others find the walking and repeated travel between encounters tedious, so the game's pace and story-focused approach do not work for everyone.
