Set in Tokyo’s 24 Wards in 1999, the story begins with a string of murders that brings the name of suspected serial killer Kamui Uehara back into focus. You play a member of the Republic special forces unit, while a connected storyline follows journalist Tokio Morishima as he encounters the same web of events from another perspective.
The game is primarily a visual novel: read dialogue and case material, move through simple 3D environments, and interact with people and objects. Occasional puzzles and investigation steps add light point-and-click elements, but reading and following the mysteries make up most of the experience.
The story unfolds in chapters across the Transmitter and Placebo storylines. Their different viewpoints offer separate pieces of information to connect as the cases develop. Text, 3D scenes, illustrations, and filmed and animated sequences combine in a shifting, mixed-media presentation.
Players who enjoy the game often praise its unusual visual presentation, atmospheric music, memorable characters, and surreal crime mystery. Several say the two perspectives and scattered details make the story compelling to piece together. Other reviewers find the plot difficult to follow and the slow, repetitive sections—especially in Placebo—tedious, with little puzzle-focused gameplay.
