You play as a Colonial Marine investigating an alien infestation aboard the Sulaco and across locations including Hadley's Hope and LV-426. The campaign follows the squad through a series of missions as they face Xenomorphs and human enemies.
Combat is built around first-person shooting with Marine weapons such as pulse rifles, shotguns, flamethrowers, and motion trackers. The campaign can be played solo or cooperatively with up to four players, and missions also include moments that call for stealth or escape.
Players earn experience to unlock perks, weapons, and character looks, and can customize weapon loadouts. The Collection also includes the Stasis Interrupted campaign expansion and Bug Hunt, a mode focused on surviving waves of enemies.
Players who enjoy the game often point to its familiar Alien settings, movie-inspired weapons and sound effects, and straightforward action against Xenomorphs. Some also find the campaign more enjoyable with friends. Others say problems with enemy AI, gunplay, bugs, and the campaign's pacing get in the way, while several note that online multiplayer is difficult to find players for.

| Multiplayer | The game supports single-player and online multiplayer. The campaign supports drop-in/drop-out online co-op for up to 4 players. Reviews also describe PvP multiplayer and a separate Bug Hunt horde/survival mode, but current public matchmaking appears sparse and sessions are commonly organized with friends or community groups. |
| Multiplayer & mods | Community mods and fixes are repeatedly said to improve AI, visuals, and balance. Several reviews state all co-op players must apply the same AI fix for it to work correctly online, and overhaul mods such as TemplarGFX/Templar Overhaul may prevent or disrupt online play unless every player has the same mod setup. Some reviews recommend vanilla for Bug Hunt because certain mods can introduce multiplayer bugs. |
