You command an IAF Marine on a squad sent to clear an alien infestation from an off-world colony. The game is built around four-player, top-down cooperative missions.
Fight through alien swarms while completing objectives and supporting your team. Marine roles matter: coordinate attacks, conserve ammunition, protect teammates, and use tools such as turrets or door-welding equipment to manage threats.
Choose among four classes and eight characters, then shape your role with weapons and equipment loadouts. Gaining levels unlocks persistent items, while higher difficulty settings offer tougher missions to tackle with your squad.
Players often praise the cooperative teamwork, saying that coordinating class roles makes alien-filled missions engaging and tense, especially with friends or at higher difficulties. Reviews also appreciate the range of weapons and the mission atmosphere. Recurring reservations include the small active player base, the short campaign, and the difficulty of playing alone.

| Multiplayer | Alien Swarm is a co-op focused multiplayer game with online play and matchmaking. Official marketing states 4-player co-op, and multiple reviews consistently describe squads of up to 4 players. Single-player/practice is also indicated by the store features and reviews, including offline practice and use of bots or console commands, but the game is repeatedly described as designed primarily for cooperative play rather than PvP. |
| Multiplayer & mods | The game includes mod tools and full code access. Reviews state there are custom maps and campaigns, server-only and client-only mods, and community servers. Mods can extend multiplayer content, and one review says vanilla clients can still play with some client-only or server-only mods. Claims of PvP modes and 8-player co-op appear only in reference to mods or Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop, not the base game. |
