You play as Rico Rodriguez, an agent sent to the tropical island of San Esperito to help overthrow its corrupt regime. Local rebel forces and rival cartels are also vying for power.
Take on story and side missions, fight government forces, and explore the island by land, sea, and air. You can use a grappling hook and parachute to pull off stunts, including jumping between or onto moving vehicles.
Liberating settlements and other locations strengthens allied factions and can provide access to support and equipment. Missions can be approached in different ways, while exploration offers additional activities, collectibles, and vehicles to find.
Players who enjoy the game often highlight the freedom to roam a large island, use a wide range of vehicles, and create action-movie-style stunts with the hook and parachute. Some also value it for nostalgia or for seeing the series’ early ideas. Other reviews find the activities repetitive and the controls or technical behavior rough.
