Ulala, a reporter for Space Channel 5, investigates a troupe that has abducted people and forces them to dance. She confronts the dancers and their robots onstage, freeing hostages as she pursues the story.
Gameplay centers on copying rhythmic call-and-response sequences: follow directional cues and vocal commands such as “chu” and “hey” in time with the music. Mistimed inputs can disrupt a sequence, so listening and keeping the beat are essential.
The story advances through chapters with changing sequences, tempos, and musical set pieces. Performance is reflected in viewer ratings and rescue rates, giving players a reason to replay stages for better results; costumes can also be unlocked.
Players frequently praise the catchy soundtrack, distinctive colorful style, and the engaging, sometimes demanding rhythm gameplay, with Ulala and the game’s playful presentation also drawing affection. Some reviews warn that the PC port can have timing or audio-sync problems, and several lament that the game is no longer available for purchase.
