Kou Kadokura is a mercenary mech pilot who awakens on a virtual battlefield with gaps in his memory. As war threatens Suzushiro City, he searches for the truth behind Gray Christmas, the tragedy that changed his life, while navigating a conflict between powerful factions.
The story combines visual-novel scenes with real-time mech battles. Its routes unfold in a set order, each adding perspective on the characters, factions, and central mysteries as Kou recovers pieces of his past.
In combat, players equip a mech with weapons for close-range or ranged fighting and build custom combinations of attacks. Weapons gain experience and evolve through a branching tech tree, while further playthroughs carry progress forward and unlock more story branches.
Players who praise Baldr Sky often point to the combination of mech combat and visual-novel storytelling: they enjoy making attack combos, tailoring weapon loadouts, and seeing battles heighten the story. Reviews also frequently appreciate the cyberpunk setting, unfolding mysteries, characters, and soundtrack. Some players find the long reading time and repeated story or flashback sections tiring, and a number report crashes or compatibility problems; opinions on the story and combat are not unanimous.
