A zombie outbreak has quarantined Los Angeles. You play as one of six survivors who has been bitten but is immune, trying to survive while investigating the outbreak and your connection to it.
Combat is viewed from a first-person perspective and centers on melee weapons, with firearms and throwable weapons also available. You can modify weapons with effects such as fire or electricity, use hazards in the environment, and damage zombies in visibly different ways.
The campaign moves through distinct Los Angeles districts via story missions and side quests, with opportunities to explore for supplies, weapons, and other finds. Leveling unlocks skill cards that can be swapped to adjust your abilities, while weapon upgrades and co-op offer other ways to shape a run.
Players who enjoy the game often praise its visceral zombie combat, detailed damage and dismemberment, and the satisfying feel of its weapons. Its bright, varied Los Angeles settings and weapon customization also recur as positives, with some players especially enjoying co-op and the game’s humorous tone. Criticism commonly centers on repetitive missions and combat, backtracking for keys or electrical parts, and a story that many find weak or abrupt; opinions on the story, tone, and co-op experience vary.
For customers in Germany - Once zombies are defeated, players can no longer deal damage to or further dismember zombie corpses. USK players can play co-op sessions with international players through friend invites and joining friends. For public matchmaking, USK players can only play with other USK players.
