As a lone warrior armed with an obsidian greatsword, you enter the Citadel to confront the Old Gods, whose release of a Desolation threatens humanity. The dark-fantasy story unfolds through brief narration, conversations with NPCs, and details found as you explore.
Combat is centered on one-on-one battles with bosses rather than regular enemies. You learn each foe’s attack patterns, dodge their strikes, and use sword attacks—including charged hits that help restore health—to stay in the fight.
Boss victories grant powers and shards for customizing your abilities across three fighting styles, and you can change your build between attempts. The Citadel also holds NPC quests and hidden items; after the main campaign, an arena lets you revisit bosses, while New Game+ offers another, harder run.
Players who enjoy the game often praise its distinct boss encounters and the satisfaction of learning attack patterns through repeated attempts. Reviews also highlight the pixel-art environments, sound, and the ability to adapt builds. Others find the difficulty frustrating, with some reporting awkward hitboxes or movement, and several describe the campaign as short or the boss-focused format as too narrow.
