Set during the Third Crusade, the game follows Altaïr, an Assassin tasked with eliminating influential figures in the Holy Land. A present-day storyline frames his experiences as Desmond relives an ancestor’s memories through the Animus.
Before each assassination, gather information about a target through activities such as eavesdropping, pickpocketing, and interrogation. Then choose how to approach the kill, using stealth or direct combat, and escape if guards pursue you.
Move through Jerusalem, Acre, and Damascus by climbing buildings, crossing rooftops, and blending into crowds. Viewpoints reveal parts of the city, while responsive crowds and guards can help or hinder your progress; sword fights and other weapons provide a direct option when stealth fails.
Players who enjoy the game often point to its story and philosophical conflict, its atmosphere across the Holy Land cities, and the satisfaction of moving over rooftops as Altaïr. Some also value the crowd-blending approach to assassinations. Reviews frequently criticize the repeated investigation-and-assassination structure; many PC reviews also report freezes or crashes and the need for troubleshooting, which can get in the way of playing.
