Play as BSAA agent Chris Redfield, joined by local agent Sheva Alomar, as they investigate a new bioweapon outbreak in Africa. The infected have become aggressive creatures, and the pair work together to uncover what is behind the crisis.
Fight through linear stages in a third-person shooter built around aiming while stationary, using firearms, and staggering enemies to follow up with melee attacks. The campaign can be played solo with an AI partner or cooperatively with another player.
Collect treasure to sell and use the proceeds to upgrade weapons. Chapters can be replayed, and completing the story opens additional replay options and modes, including Mercenaries.
Many supplied reviews enjoy the campaign most in co-op, where coordinating, sharing supplies, and handling hectic encounters together creates memorable and often funny moments. Reviewers also praise the action-focused combat, satisfying gunplay and melee follow-ups, and characters such as Sheva and Wesker. Some value the extra replay modes, while others note that the older controls and action-heavy direction may not suit everyone.

| Multiplayer | Resident Evil 5 supports solo play with an AI partner or 2-player cooperative play. The campaign is playable in co-op, with online co-op explicitly indicated and local co-op/split screen strongly indicated by tags and multiple reviews. Additional multiplayer content includes Mercenaries-related modes and a Versus mode. |
| Multiplayer & mods | Reviews repeatedly mention community patches and fixes to improve compatibility, launching, and online functionality on PC. Mods/fan patches appear to affect stability and access rather than add new multiplayer modes. |
