Age of Empires II is a real-time strategy game set across more than a thousand years of history. You lead a civilization, developing it from a small settlement into an empire, and can play the original single-player campaigns from Age of Kings and The Conquerors.
Villagers gather food, wood, gold, and stone while you construct buildings, research technologies, and raise an army. Advancing through historical ages unlocks new options, while each civilization’s strengths shape how you develop your economy and approach battles.
Play campaigns, skirmishes against the AI, or online matches against other players. Scenario objectives can include defeating opponents, capturing relics, or building and defending a Wonder; alliances and different game modes offer other ways to shape a match.
Players often describe the game as a lasting classic, with nostalgia for earlier play alongside continued enjoyment today. Recurring praise focuses on strategic depth, the variety of civilizations and campaigns, and the replayability of matches against friends, online opponents, or the AI. Some reviewers prefer this edition’s familiar presentation, while others point to its retired status and limitations compared with newer versions.

LAN support appears to be absent in this Steam HD version despite some reviews referencing LAN from older versions or informal use. |
| Multiplayer & mods | Steam Workshop support is confirmed. Reviews mention custom maps, scenarios, textures, add-ons, AI scripts, and other mods. Mods and user-generated content can extend multiplayer variety, but no provided source confirms universal mod compatibility in online matches. |
