In this real-time strategy game, you lead an ancient civilization from a small settlement toward a powerful empire. Villagers gather resources and build the foundations of your growing society.
Develop your economy, construct buildings, research upgrades, and advance through the Stone, Bronze, and Iron Ages. Train an army and use it to defeat rival civilizations.
Play historical campaigns with mission-specific objectives, or set up custom and random-map matches for solo or multiplayer battles. The Definitive Edition also includes a scenario editor for creating and sharing custom missions.
Players often enjoy returning to the classic civilization-building loop of gathering resources, developing a settlement, advancing through the ages, and building an army. Nostalgia is a recurring draw, alongside appreciation for the campaigns, remastered visuals, and music. Some also value the strategic challenge, while others find the difficulty frustrating.
