You play a Vault 101 resident who ventures into the post-nuclear Capital Wasteland after their father leaves the vault. The search leads through the ruins of Washington, D.C., where radiation, mutants, and other dangers threaten survival.
Travel freely through the wasteland, follow the main story or take on side quests, and investigate ruined buildings, tunnels, and other locations. Exploration can uncover supplies, weapons, encounters, and stories beyond the main path.
Develop your character with SPECIAL attributes, skills, and perks, and choose how to handle situations through dialogue or combat. V.A.T.S. pauses combat so you can target specific body parts and queue attacks; you can also switch between first- and third-person views.
Players often praise the Capital Wasteland’s atmosphere and the freedom to wander off the main quest, with side quests, discoveries, and role-playing choices also recurring as draws. Some enjoy the story and V.A.T.S. combat, while opinions on the main story and combat are mixed. Many sampled reviews also report trouble launching the PC version or keeping it running, sometimes requiring unofficial fixes.
