In a series of fantasy challenges presented by a mysterious dealer, you build a deck and set out to face the dangers it deals. Each run unfolds as a path of cards representing encounters, locations, and potential equipment.
Before a run, you customize encounter and equipment decks. As you move between cards, you face story events and choices that can bring rewards or penalties; some outcomes depend on a shuffled-card test. Food is limited, so each step along the path has a cost.
When an encounter turns to combat, you fight enemies in an arena using attacks, dodges, and counters. Rewards and challenge completions unlock additional cards and encounters, while a sequence of boss challenges advances the campaign.
Players who enjoy Hand of Fate often praise its unusual blend of deck-built adventures and real-time combat, along with the dealer's narration and the atmospheric card-table presentation. Unlocking new encounters and trying different decks also gives some players reasons to replay challenges. Others find the combat clunky or repetitive, and describe the randomness and later boss encounters as frustrating.
