Set in modern-day Tokyo, the game follows a student balancing ordinary school life with life as a Phantom Thief. With fellow thieves, they enter Palaces—dungeons shaped by distorted hearts—to confront Shadows and take their Treasures.
Combat is turn-based, with a party of Phantom Thieves using their abilities and Personas against enemies. Players explore Palaces and Mementos, face bosses and optional challenging Shadows, and develop Personas as they build their team.
Outside the dungeons, players can spend time with characters, work part-time, join activities, and improve social stats through city-life activities. Character and Persona growth, resource gathering, and gacha-based recruitment support ongoing team progression.
Players who enjoy the game often praise its story and characters, especially later story arcs, along with its soundtrack, turn-based battles, team-building, and character-bond stories. Reviews are sharply divided, with many saying gacha recruitment, stamina limits, slow progression, and long dungeon exploration get in the way of those strengths; several also report losing access to their accounts.
