Zidane and the Tantalus Theater Troupe set out to kidnap Princess Garnet, heir to Alexandria, but discover she wants to escape. Joined by Garnet and her guard Steiner, they journey through a fantasy world and uncover secrets surrounding the Crystal and a threat to their home.
Explore towns, dungeons, and the overworld with a party of up to four characters. Battles use turn-based commands, with distinct character roles shaping how the group attacks, casts spells, and supports one another.
Equip weapons and armor to learn their abilities through battles; once mastered, those skills can be used without the equipment. Characters can enter Trance for powerful skills, and synthesis combines items or gear into stronger equipment. Optional diversions include Chocobo Hot and Cold, Jump Rope, and the Tetra Master card game.
Players often praise the memorable cast and emotionally engaging story, especially its character development and themes, alongside the soundtrack and distinctive fantasy world. Some also enjoy the equipment-based ability progression and exploration.
