In Midgar, Cloud—a former member of Shinra’s elite SOLDIER force—joins the rebel group AVALANCHE in its fight against the corporation draining the planet’s Mako energy. The conflict takes the party beyond the city as they pursue their goal of protecting the planet.
Explore locations, talk with characters, uncover secrets, and take part in optional activities and minigames. As the journey opens out from Midgar, the party travels across a wider world with side content to discover.
Combat uses an Active Time Battle gauge: when a character’s gauge fills, you choose an action. Equip Materia to give characters spells and abilities, and combine it to shape party roles and tactics. Battles, character growth, equipment, and Materia all contribute to preparing for tougher encounters.
Players frequently praise the story, characters, and soundtrack, describing them as memorable and emotionally engaging. Reviews also highlight the freedom to experiment with Materia and the rewards of exploring the world and its optional activities. Some players criticize this PC release for requiring an online account, while others find its visuals and older gameplay conventions dated.
In Midgar, a city controlled by the mega-conglomerate Shinra Inc., the No. 1 Mako Reactor has been blown up by a rebel group, AVALANCHE.
AVALANCHE was secretly formed to wage a rebellion against Shinra Inc., an organisation which is absorbing Mako energy, destroying the natural resources of the planet. Cloud, a former member of Shinra's elite combat force, SOLDIER, was involved with the bombing of the Mako Reactor.
Can Cloud and AVALANCHE protect the planet from the huge, formidable enemy, Shinra Inc.?
