You take the role of a general in the American Civil War, choosing to command the Union or Confederacy. The campaign follows a sequence of more than 50 battles, from smaller engagements to major historical clashes; many historical battles can also be played separately.
In real-time battles, you deploy and direct infantry, cavalry, artillery, and skirmishers to capture objectives and outmaneuver the opposing army. Terrain affects cover and visibility, while morale, fatigue, and supplies shape how units perform. You can issue orders to individual units or direct larger formations toward a goal.
Between battles, you recruit and organize troops, assign officers, and spend resources on weapons and reinforcements. Units gain experience and officers can advance in rank, while casualties and campaign results affect the army you bring into later engagements. Success can also unlock additional command and army-building options.
Players who enjoy the game often highlight its tactical battles, historical battlefields, and the satisfaction of building and improving an army over a campaign. Reviews also praise the scope for trying different approaches and the challenge of managing terrain, morale, and unit positions. Some players, however, find enemy scaling and the campaign’s scripted structure frustrating.
