Choose the Union or Confederacy and guide its war effort through campaigns spanning 1861 to 1865. Play one of five campaign start dates with historical objectives, or select from standalone battles; campaign choices can also lead to alternate-history outcomes.
Manage national finances, policies, diplomacy, morale, recruitment, and weapons procurement while organizing commanders and troops into armies. Build and use rail lines to move forces and supplies, and use blockades, raids, sieges, or blockade runners to pressure the opposing side.
When armies meet, command troops in real-time battles on historical battlefields, with engagements that can last multiple days. Coordinate formations and reserves through a chain of command, account for commanders’ attributes and delayed orders, and use engineers to dig trenches or build pontoons as reinforcements arrive.
Among the supplied reviews, players who enjoy the game often value its detailed Civil War campaign, combining national management and military logistics with real-time battles. They also praise organizing and customizing armies, the historical commanders and command systems, and the period atmosphere created by maps, reports, music, and battle sounds. These strengths are not shared by every reviewer, and many describe substantial frustrations with execution.
