Sonic travels to Little Planet, where Dr. Eggman is hunting the Time Stones and has taken control of the world. As Sonic, race through its zones, foil Eggman's plans, and protect the planet.
This is a 2D side-scrolling platform game built around running, jumping, and navigating sprawling stages. Past and future signposts let Sonic travel between eras by maintaining speed, revealing different versions of each level.
In the past, Sonic can destroy Eggman's machines to improve a zone's future. Special stages put him in an arena where he pursues and destroys UFOs to earn Time Stones; collecting the stones is another route to a good future. The enhanced release includes both US and Japanese soundtrack options.
Many supplied reviewers enjoy the distinctive time-travel system, especially exploring altered versions of stages and seeing past actions change their futures. The soundtrack, colorful presentation, and replay value also draw frequent praise. Reactions to the sprawling level layouts and special stages are mixed, with some reviewers finding them confusing or frustrating; many also express annoyance that this standalone version was delisted.
