Set in 1988, the story follows yakuza Kazuma Kiryu and cabaret club manager Goro Majima in Tokyo and Osaka. Their separate paths unfold amid conflicts between criminal groups and become intertwined.
Both protagonists fight in real-time beat-'em-up combat, with three distinct styles each that can be switched between. Fights use hand-to-hand attacks and improvised weapons, while character abilities can be developed.
Away from the main story, players can explore entertainment districts, take on side stories, visit arcades and discos, and try activities such as darts. Kiryu can manage a business and Majima can run a cabaret club. Director's Cut also adds story scenes and the online Red Light Raid mode, where players team up against enemy waves.
Players who praise the underlying game often highlight its crime story and characters, real-time combat, and the contrast between serious plot events and the city's side activities. Several single out Majima's story. At the same time, many reviews focus on dissatisfaction with this edition's price and removal of the original release, while some also criticize the added scenes, technical performance, or localization.
Yakuza 0 Director's Cut is the definitive edition of the critically acclaimed prequel to the Yakuza series.
