Natural Selection 2 pits human Marines against the alien Kharaa in team-based multiplayer matches. Most players fight on the ground in first person, while one player on each team can take the Commander role and direct the battle from a top-down view.
Marines use firearms and equipment, and can build defenses or deploy in powered Exosuits and jetpacks. Alien players can evolve into five lifeforms with different abilities, from wall-running Skulks to healing and building Gorges.
Commanders issue orders, place structures, gather resources, research technology, and deploy support abilities. Teams contest territory to expand their bases and strengthen their forces, making frontline fights part of a wider strategic struggle.
Players who enjoy Natural Selection 2 often praise its unusual blend of first-person combat and commander-led strategy, along with the teamwork and distinct playstyles of its human and alien sides. Some describe coordinated matches as especially rewarding. Reviews also frequently mention the small player population, a steep learning curve, and unwelcoming experiences on some servers.
