Photojournalist Frank West returns to Willamette during a zombie outbreak in the Christmas season. The open-world campaign follows him as he investigates the outbreak and explores the town and its shopping mall.

Search buildings for supplies and blueprints, take photos to investigate clues, and fight large crowds of zombies. Combine found items into improvised weapons and vehicles, and use temporary EXO Suits to wield heavy gear and unleash powerful attacks.

The campaign has no countdown timer, letting players explore and complete activities at their own pace. Earn experience and skill points to improve Frank, rescue survivors, and take on optional activities; a separate mode supports four-player co-op.

Players who enjoy the game often praise its straightforward zombie combat, improvised weapon combinations, and freedom to explore without a countdown.
