A demonic invasion engulfs the UAC’s Mars research facility. You play a Marine among the survivors, making your way through the damaged base and confronting the creatures that have overrun it.
Explore cramped, shadowy corridors and fight demons with an arsenal that includes a pistol, shotgun, chainsaw, and grenades. In the original version, you must choose between holding a flashlight to see and holding a weapon to fight.
Search the facility for ammunition, health supplies, secrets, and access information. PDA records, audio messages, and other details found in the base fill in the story as you progress through its levels.
Reviewers who enjoy DOOM 3 often point to its oppressive Mars-base atmosphere, eerie sound and lighting, and the tension of having to trade the flashlight for a weapon. Some also appreciate its methodical combat and story details found in PDA messages. Others find the slow pace and repeated encounters tiring, so reactions to its horror-focused approach vary.
