You play Special Forces Sgt. Michael Becket, sent on a routine mission shortly before the blast that sets the first F.E.A.R.'s events in motion. After the disaster, Becket and his squad cross a ruined landscape, looking for clues about how to stop Alma Wade.
The campaign is a first-person shooter built around gunfights with enemy forces. Becket can slow time with enhanced reflexes, use weapons and grenades, and interact with the environment by turning furniture into cover or clearing obstacles.
Campaign levels move through indoor and outdoor locations, with paranormal sequences and scripted events alongside the firefights. Some sections put Becket in a combat mech, and the game also includes competitive multiplayer.
Reviews often praise the satisfying gunplay and slow-motion combat, along with the variety of locations and the change of pace offered by mech sections. Some players also enjoy the atmospheric horror sequences and continuation of Alma’s story. Others feel the sequel leans more toward action, with less tension and less tactical combat than the first game.
