Set in 1988, Yakuza 0 follows Kazuma Kiryu and Goro Majima through parallel criminal stories in Tokyo and Osaka. Kiryu is drawn into trouble after a debt collection goes wrong, while Majima manages a cabaret club amid his own conflicts.
Combat is built around brawling, with each character able to switch between three fighting styles. Players can use objects found in the environment during fights and develop combat abilities through skill trees.
Beyond the main story, the two city districts offer optional side stories and diversions, including arcades, karaoke, dancing, and other minigames. Players can also manage real estate businesses or a cabaret club, with activities and missions providing ways to earn money for upgrades.
Players repeatedly praise the dramatic crime story and its characters, along with the contrast between serious main-story events and often-comic side stories. Reviews also highlight the satisfying brawling, the range of optional activities—especially cabaret management—and the atmosphere and music of the city settings.
